Common Crossbills at Beacon Fell CP, Lancs.
Autumn 2002 - by Bill Aspin.

Following an obvious nationwide influx of this species into the country, good numbers of Common Crossbills were located at Beacon Fell Country Park during August - September 2002.
This was to become a feature reflected throughout most suitable areas in East Lancs and the wider county as the autumn progressed. Indeed, good numbers continued to be seen at many suitable locations in Bowland and the wider East Lancs area throughout the winter of 2002/2003.

The Beacon Fell flocks were one of the first concentrations of the autumn to be located in the county, proving very popular with county birders as a result.
The first report was of a flock of 30 flying over the visitor centre on 7th August, with 40 reported on the 10th. On 25th August, 50+ birds were present SE of the summit. The peak count occurred on 27th, when 100+ were noted in the same area ( a small clearfell area, which the birds were frequenting, to drink from small pools by felled logs). Thereafter, up to 40+ birds were regularly seen at the site until late September.
Very few juvs were noted (anyone disagree with this?), the majority being adult females, although there was a good percentage of 'red' males present.
