Area covered:  The area consists of the whole of the Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle and Ribble Valley Districts and those parts of Blackburn with Darwen not in the Irwell catchment.  The area does not include the Rossendale District and has not done so for several years, nor any part of Yorkshire, even though these lie on Sheet 103.

Perhaps the simplest guide to the club’s recording area is that the district boundaries around its perimeter mainly follow watersheds.  Going clockwise; in the north-east the boundary cuts across the Ribble catchment following the Lancashire-Yorkshire county boundary; in the east the boundary lies between the catchment of the Calder and the catchments of the Aire and Yorkshire Calder; in the south it lies between the Calder and Darwen and the Irwell; in the south-west it runs down the River Roddlesworth and a small length of the Darwen before once again cutting across the Ribble; in the west it lies between the Loud and Brock; in the north-west and north it lies between the Hodder and the Bleasdale Calder, Wyre and Lune.  The recording area thus includes the Ribble catchment from Alston and Balderstone in the south to Nappa (between Paythorne and Hellifield) in the north, the whole of the Calder and Hodder catchments and part of the Darwen catchment.

Virtually all of the area can be found on Sheet 103 - Blackburn and Burnley.  However, a small part of the western edge of the Ribble Valley District lies on Sheet 102 - Preston and Blackpool, a small part of the northern edge lies on Sheet 98 - Wensleydale and Upper Wharfedale,  and a very small portion of the included part of the Blackburn with Darwen District lies on Sheet 109 - Manchester. These are additions to the club’s previous recording area.  The extreme north west corner of Sheet 103 is in the Lancaster District and no longer forms part of the club’s recording area; the very small area of Blackburn with Darwen on the southern edge of the sheet which lies in the Irwell catchment is also no longer included.  The southern end of the Blackburn with Darwen District which lies on Sheet 109 and in the Irwell catchment was never part of the club’s recording area.

Meetings
These are held on the first Monday of each month at 7.30 p.m. in the school-room next to St Anne’s Church, Barrowford Road, Fence, at Grid Ref. SD 824371.  (Turn off the A6068 at the Bay Horse at the SW end of the village; entrance to the school is immediately opposite the pub car park).  Usually there is a talk given by a visiting speaker followed by member’s verbal records of birds seen in the area during the previous month and a short business session.

Other Activities
The club is affiliated to the RSPB, BTO, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Lancashire & Cheshire Fauna Society.  Several trips are organised during the year when members meet at pre-arranged locations for a day’s birding together.  Members sighting a rare bird in the club area are requested to contact the Chairman or, if he is not available, the Secretary, who will then arrange for other members to be notified by a ‘telephone tree’ or e-mail. There is no charge for these services.
