Fishmoor Reservoir (SD697260): 2ndw Iceland Gull roosted from 16.10hrs (ASD, WCA, SGF).
Weir St Pay & Display Car Park, Blackburn (SD682277): c100 Waxwing in area today, with birds also seen in trees at the bottom of Montague St., SD678278 (LK, WCA). They also perch/feed in trees on St. Peters St., SD679277 and in the Kwik Fit tree, SD682278.
Pink-footed Goose: c150 > west over Blackburn Town Centre at 16.10hrs (JW).
Lomeshaye Marsh (SD847377): 2 Water Rail, 2 Jack Snipe, 16 Common Snipe, 2 singing male Song Thrush, 3 Goldcrest. For info, Water Rail were present in summer and may have bred (AH).
Barden Marsh: 2 Water Rail (JM per AH).
Common Buzzard: 1 between M65 jcn. 3-4 (B&JC).

Weir St Pay & Display Car Park, Blackburn (SD682277): 80 Waxwing 08.45-09.00hrs at least (B&JC). Not far from Weir St., c75 Waxwing in trees at the bottom of Montague St., SD678278 (DBi). The birds also perch/feed in trees on St. Peters St., SD679277 and in the Kwik Fit tree, SD682278.
Parsonage Reservoir (SD700320): Adf Greater Scaup, 16 Goldeneye (3m 15f), 2 Pochard, flock 100+ Fieldfare in fields nr. Parsonage Farm also flock 1000+ Starlings in the area (B&JC).

Weir St Pay & Display Car Park, Blackburn (SD682277): "Well over a hundred" Waxwing in the area, 13.00hrs at least (Nigel Baker). This morning the birds were moving between here and berry bearing/perching trees on St. Peters St., SD679277. They also perch in the Kwik Fit tree, SD682278 (WCA).
Merlin: A fem/imm flew over the A59 nr Trafalgar Motel (ASD).
Parsonage Reservoir (SD700320): Adf Greater Scaup, 2 Greylag Goose, 33 Canada Goose, 21 Mallard, 1pr Pochard, 5 (1m 4f) Goldeneye, 1f Scaup, 1 Peregrine, 1 Sparrowhawk, c55 Fieldfare, c25 Redwing (AAC, EO, DBi).

Rishton Reservoir (SD715300): An adult dark-belllied Brent Goose showing well on the western side of the main reservoir, 15.10hrs at least. The first ELOC record since one by the River Calder at Altham / Martholme on 5th April 1998. Also, adult Iceland Gull mid-afternoon (JW). 128 G.B.B. Gull counted at 15.00hrs and 15 Teal (WCA).
Whinney Hill Tip, Altham (SD757305): 2 (ad + 2ndw) Iceland Gull seen today (DBi, JW).
Fishmoor Reservoir (SD697260): 2 (1stw + 2ndw) Iceland Gull roosted (JW, WCA, DBi, SGF) Note: Only main Fishmoor pre-roost checked this evening, so more 'white-wingers may have roosted. Birds were still coming in at dusk.

Rawtenstall: 17 Waxwing on rowans along the track to factory shops off Fallbarn Road near Asda at 15.00hrs (Birdguides).
Common Buzzard: Flew south over observers home at Sunnybower, Blackburn (ASD).

Whinney Hill Tip, Altham (SD757305): 2 (1stw + 2ndw) Iceland Gull, 1x1stw Glaucous Gull present this afternoon, until 15.40hrs at least (ASD). All birds are likely to have roosted at Fishmoor Res.
Fishmoor Reservoir (SD697260): 2 (2ndw + adult) Iceland Gull roosted (DBi, JW, WCA). A minimum of several thousand large Gulls roosted this evening, with lots of birds still coming in at 16.30hrs in near total darkness. Also, 1pr Wigeon, sev Goosander. Stocks Reservoir (SD730560): 3 (1m, 2 f/imm) Common Scoter present, a highly unusual mid-winter record. Also, 1pr R.B. Merganser, 23 Pintail, 8 Goldeneye. 6 Bullfinch > west over the island viewpoint (JW).
Pink-footed Geese: 120+ > west over Fence, SD825374, at 15.00hrs. At Altham, SD774331, 75 > west at 15.35hrs, also c70 grounded birds here (JM).
Darwen Parkway Woods (SD681256): A Kingfisher on the River Darwen (B&JC).

Weir St Pay & Display Car Park, Blackburn (SD682277): 35 Waxwing present 13.00hrs at least. Plenty of berries here (WB, ASD, DBi, Nigel Baker). The birds also perching in single Tree in nearby Kwik Fit car park. A 1stw Glaucous Gull flew west with 6 large Gulls at 12.40hrs (ASD).
Burnley (SD83): Waxwings: 50+ in the top of large lombardii poplars in Thompson Park. 27 feeding on Whitebeam berries on Ridge Rd. mid-pm (GG).
Noyna Rd, Foulridge (SD903428): 30+ Brambling (JT).

Burnley (SD83): c200 Waxwing flew over Thompson park and appeared to follow the roosting starling into the large Leylandii next to the boat house, but not conclusive as the light was fading fast (GG).
Weir St Pay & Display Car Park, Blackburn (SD682277): min of 27 Waxwing present 14.20hrs at least. Plenty of berries here. The birds also perching in single Tree in nearby Kwik Fit car park. (WCA).
Pleasington Old Hall Wood NR (SD646370): A Waxwing flew west, calling, at 10.20hrs (WCA).
Outside the area: A Barn Owl at M65 jcn1a roundabout (Karl Johnson). 40+ Waxwing by Chorley Railway Station (RSp).

For info: There was a report from a reliable source that the drake Ring-necked Duck had returned to Upper Rivington Reservoir in early November. However, it wasn't found again, despite a thorough search. The Pochard flock has now moved onto Anglezarke Reservoir, where they are easier to observe. There was no sign of the RND amongst them at the December WeBs count (NS).

The birds are in the field at the opposite side of the road, SD891287. Images of one of the birds, taken by Sean Gray on 9th Dec, have prompted some comment on the internet suggesting the possible spectre of Blyth's. Richards Pipit: 1 regularly seen throughout the day, mainly in flight. The second bird was reported briefly mid-pm (many obs).
Waxwings: Burnley: 114 by James Hargreaves Plumbing Merchants / Red Rose Plastics at the junction of Parliament St / Todmorden Road, SD848322 at 10.15hrs (Birdguides). 120 nr the Fire Station on Todmorden Rd at 13.15hrs (Birdguides).
Shedden Clough (SD893301): 11.30hrs: A mobile flock of 100+ Finches, mainly Brambling. 1 Green Woodpecker (Andrea Jackson).

Burnley: 80+ in tree at rear of James Hargreaves / Red Rose Plastics (near Curriculum Development Centre off Todmorden Road,Burnley), 9.55-10.25hrs (MF). 170 near Fire Station late morning (Birdguides). 100+ in trees behind Burnley Ambulance Station (next to Manchester Rd train station) 13.40-1400hrs. They are Quite mobile, but keep returning (Craig Stracey). Kelbrook (SD905445): 4 in Churchyard at 12.00hrs (JT).
Billinge Woods, Witton Country Park (SD658282): 13.30-15.30hrs: 100 Woodpigeon, 5 Magpie, 16 Rook, 2 Carrion Crow, 1 Jay, 2 Pheasant, 1 G.S. Richards Pipit: 2 birds present, 13.50hrs at least in fields by Coal Clough Wind Farm. (AH, MkB, WB, BJ, RA, MF, JW, T&JD, PGri, David Ousey).
Barrow, Lamb Row (SD7337): All reports: 120 Waxwing in the garden of Lamb Row Cottage this morning (per AW). At least 100 mobile Waxwing in the area mid-morning, ranging from Barrow village - McDonalds on the A59 (at the latter location also seen flying in direction of Whalley) (MkB).
Clitheroe (SD7741): 55 Waxwing in the area of Booths Supermarket, 11.00hrs at least. The birds have been feeding on the berry bearing bushes in the car park and have also been perching in trees on the railway siding (AC, Alan Moorhouse, MB).
Burnley (SD83): Waxwings today: 20+ in trees at Todmorden Rd entrance to Towneley Holmes this morning (MF). 70+ on berries opposite Tesco and also in large trees by side of canal at 14.00hrs (MkB).

No sign of the Richards Pipit/s SE of Mereclough, cSD890290, morning at least (AH, PGri).
Barrow, Lamb Row (SD7337): Variable numbers of Waxwing noted throughout the day in the area. None were seen when checked at 09.30 & 10.30hrs (LP). Between 13.00-13.30hrs, 42 were on berries to the rear of Lamb Row Cottage, 7 on berry bearing trees by the Indian Restaurant, 23 flew into gardens on Whitacre Lane and c20 flew towards Clitheroe GC (AW). At 14.20hrs, c120 were feeding behind Lamb Row Cottage (JM). Still plenty of berries in the area. Of interest, one bird was colour ringed with a blue and yellow ring on the left leg (AW).
Burnley (SD83): Waxwings today: 40+ on berries by Burnley Fire Station at mid-day (GG). 100+ still on Towneley Park Road nr Towneley High School, 10.30hrs at least (Birdguides). 25+ flew over Parliament St., above Todmorden Rd entrance to Towneley Park at 15.00hrs (GG).
Clitheroe (SD7741): 50+ Waxwing flew over the jcn of Kirkmoor Rd & Castle View (JM).
Kwik Save, Nelson (SD862382): 42 Waxwing present 14.30hrs at least (Jill Turner, BJ, KS).

2nd December 2004.
Richards Pipit: 1 poss 2 birds SE of Mereclough, in rough pasture either side of the road known as the 'Long Causeway' at cSD890290, nr Shedden Clough (AH). Found at 14.00hrs, the initial sighting involved two birds, one of which called, whilst the other, of the same size and jizz, remained silent. Thereafter, one bird showed well on the ground at times up to c15.20hrs and was heard to call in excess of 10 times (AH, BJ, DA). The last sightings between 15.40-15.50hrs involved three silent flight views, after which the bird was assumed to have gone to roost in juncus (AH, BJ, DA, WCA). During the course of the evening, it has come to light that a large Pipit was seen in the area yesterday (MF per AH). Please view from the road or public footpaths.
Barrow, Lamb Row (SD7337): 105 Waxwing in garden of Lamb Roe Cottage, at mid-day (Ralph Bailey per AAC). View from the public footpath that goes between the cottage and the Spread Eagle Public House.
Towneley Park, Burnley (SD854307): 50 Waxwing at 13.30hrs feeding on Rowan on the main road through the park, approx 200yrds past Towneley High School, opp the 7th Green on the Golf Course). By 14.15hrs numbers had increased to a minimum of 95 birds, and were still present 15.00hrs at least (GMo).

Shedden Clough (SD893301): 100+ Brambling . A mixed flock of 400+ Finches, probably all Brambling and Chaffinch, circled the wood and flew west at 1100hrs. Also f/imm Merlin, Sparrowhawk, Green Woodpecker and 20+ Goldfinch. The recent large flock of Reed Bunting seem to have dispersed. Maybe they were a hard weather movement as their appearance coincided with the cold snap (AH).

Waxwings: Longridge: 4 perched in trees by the Church on Lower Lane, SD606368, at 07.40hrs. Three further checks of the trees up to 11.30hrs were made, with no further sign, but this area produced Waxwing earlier in year so there may be a food source out of view and the birds may have been perched in between feeding sorties (LP). Mellor, nr Blackburn: 1 in a garden on Mellor Brow at 08.30hrs. It flew with Blackbirds to the hedgerows which are behind Elswick Gardens and run down to the A59 at Osbaldeston (per AW). Worsthorne: 1 flew over the village school playing fields at 08.45hrs (GG).
Pink-footed Geese: Large movement today, no doubt including some duplication. Waxwing: A single at Worsthorne, SD875324, at 1115hrs, flying around observers house, calling continuously for c1min. A larger group of birds seen heading towards Rowley Lake could have also possibly been this species (GG).

Cant Clough Reservoir (SD897308): The Water Pipit has returned for the third winter (JM, BJ, PGri). The bird favours the shoreline at the southern end of the Dam/outflow. The bird is ringed on the right leg.
Stocks Reservoir (SD730560): 2 (male+female) 'Northern/eastern' Bullfinch (as has been recently present in numbers on the northern isles/east coast etc) present amongst a total of 9 Bullfinch in trees along the left hand shoreline of the overflow when looking over the causeway wall, SD736561. The flock is not showing well as they feed amongst Silver Birch/Alder, but the 'Northerns/easterns' have been heard well six times. On the first occasion the very distinctive call (Trumpeter Finch like/Toy Train horn - IE very different from 'British' Bullfinch) was heard constantly for c1min and the female was actually seen to give the call on one occasion. The majority of birds in the flock gave the familliar call. Also, 70+ flock of Lesser Redpoll, 15 Brambling and a Nuthatch in the area. A flock of P.F. Geese heard at 12.45hrs, but not seen (JW). Crown Point (SD852285): 2-3 Short-eared Owl hunting on the Burnley side of the road below the car park. They were later seen to move over to the new plantings on the moor above Clowbridge at 14.30hrs (BI).

Stocks Reservoir (SD730560): 100+ Teal, 2 Pochard, 2 Teal. Reservoir not quite full, but all muddy spits have been covered with many birds sheltering in the rushes in squally conditions (MB).
Champion Moor Flood (SD749523): 7 Teal. The flood is currently retaining more water than in the past 2-3 years, so fingers crossed the measures to restore the water holding capacity of the flood are working (MB).

Yesterday, both birds "disappeared" at 14.30hrs (Chris Batty) possibly doing the same.
